Summer Reading – The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore (Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other booksellers).
As the first step in acquiring an appreciation for these concepts, all new undergraduate day students are required to complete a summer reader that will give them a shared experience and introduce a world completely different from their own. The faculty has chosen The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore.
In the book, the author recounts his own life, which was marked by great success, and then contrasts it with the life of another man with the same name who grew up just blocks away in the same neighborhood, but whose life had been a series of setbacks and failures. He examines how such vastly divergent lives could grow from such similar beginnings, and how not only a few differences in circumstances, but also how we react to those circumstances and the opportunities they create, can have profound effects on the course of one's life.
This book was the overwhelming favorite of this year's selection committee for its insightful analysis of how the choices we make affect our own lives and the lives of others around us. We look forward to exploring these ideas this year with our new students.
