Smoke Free/Tobacco Free Policy

Smoke Free/Tobacco Free Policy

Lynn University is dedicated to promoting a healthy and comfortable environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. To meet this commitment, smoking is prohibited on campus. Research shows tobacco use, in general, constitutes a significant health hazard. The policy is designed to educate and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and to help reduce tobacco use among students, faculty and staff.

 Policy Statement

Smoking and tobacco or simulated tobacco use are prohibited in all facilities owned or leased by Lynn University and on the grounds of the property owned or leased by the University.

“Smoking” means inhaling, exhaling, burning, carrying, or possessing any lit or unlit tobacco or simulated tobacco product, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigars, vape pens, hookahs, pipe tobacco, and any other tobacco products or simulated tobacco products.

For purposes of this policy, “tobacco use” means the personal use of any tobacco or simulated tobacco product, whether intended to be lit or not, which includes, but is not limited to smoking, as defined above, the use of any other device intended to simulate smoking, as well as the use of smokeless tobacco, including snuff; chewing tobacco; smokeless pouches; any other form of loose-leaf, smokeless tobacco; and the use of unlit cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.

Enforcement

The success of this policy depends upon the thoughtfulness, consideration and cooperation of tobacco users and non-tobacco users. Employees, students, volunteers, and guests who observe individuals using tobacco or simulated tobacco are encouraged and empowered to respectfully explain that its use is not allowed.

Continued concerns should be referred to the appropriate department for review and action. For employees, volunteers and guests, issues should be referred to the immediate supervisor, The Office of Employee Services or Campus Safety.

For students, issues should be referred to the Dean of Students Office.  The Office will follow up with the student regarding the policy and available resources. Disciplinary action may occur if found in violation of this policy.
